In the world I've been invited to visit, fearies are 3 feet tall, not 3 inches. They aren't born with their wings either! When they are anywhere between 100 and 160 years old, their body begins to change. That's when they can choose to undergo this change, or to continue as they are and remain walkers and climbers. As you would think, most prepare themselves and allow the transformation to take place.
Their backs get sore and itchy. There's a small opening that begins to get, well, gooey. Once their hands and feet begin to get sticky, they know it's time to take a position on a branch with others and begin the process. Their bodies begin to cocoon. Both males and females hang from tree branches in this way for three months. They are at danger of being attacked by wild animals while in this state. Cocoons are watched and protected by the strongest of fearies day and night.
Once their wings are strong and fully developed, they can start to stretch their wings out. Just hours after emerging from their long sleep, they stretch their wings out and attempt flight, but not without the help of elders. Watching this is an ethereal experience.

This year I wanted to paint a Christmas Faerie in action. I wanted
to create something with some contrast and depth. I like this one way
better than last year's faerie, mostly because she's doing what faeries
do best... lighting up our world.
I looked up at the big evergreen in my yard on a cold
winter's eve and there she was, lighing the top as though she was
making a real star touch it's very tip. Snowflakes just begin to drift
through the sky. A little squirrel in the tree is witness. You'll
notice that she is warmly dressed, for a fearie! It has been an early
winter, and it was a cold night when I had this vision.
Painted in acrylics on illustration 9.5" x 14.5" board.

This faerie zooms down at us from high up in the sky with the hopes of scaring us! He was quite successful in my case. He rolled around on the ground laughing his head off for several minutes before flying off in search of his next victim.

A faerie walking through the forest after all the leaves have fallen, leaving the trees as stark as she is. The forest floor appears to be coming alive, menacingly pushing upward and outward.

I'm not sure what set this dragon into such a destructive rage. It could have been because some one or thing stole her eggs or destroyed her home. There's always a reason! A dragon has often been accused of guarding gems, jewels and human treasures. The only thing precious to them is their family and their flock. (I think you'd call it a flock?)
