Face of the World
a series of 8 original portraits
A series of original acrylic paintings representing how closely linked we humans are to our planet earth, right down to the percentage of elements in each of our bodies. For instance, they say our planet has around 75% to 80% water. Guess how much water is in our bodies! Almost the same. 99% of the mass of the human body is made up of the six elements: oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, calcium, and phosphorus. We've also got and need Potassium, Sulfur, Iron, Copper and a host of other elements coursing through our veins. These are elements of the earth we walk on, and the universe we live in. We are, in every way, of this planet. When the time comes for us to depart, leaving our body here, it will return to it, like a mother to a child.
Right now, though, we use these gifts which are given to us through our bodies and hopefully we use them wisely and kindly.

This is my friend Ken. Ken was a memeber of a writer's group here in Barrie. He has sinced passed away. He was a real character and a real good man, dedicated to his family and to the plight of the disabled. He had an interesting face. One with depth of character.
Our planet has this same depth of character. It's filled with cracks and crevices. It has multiple layers and it isn't looking for a facelift, regardless of how many we try to give it. In spite of all of the life changes it goes through and the violent storms it has, it remains remarkably beautiful.

This is my friend Trevor's Son. He was such an adorable, quiet little guy. He is of this earth in every way. He is playful and vibrant. He is alive. He is a child as any other, but his quiet nature gives him away, just a bit. You gotta watch those quiet ones! Like Mother Nature, there's always something up her sleeve.
In this painting you see the sun appearing over the horizon. This is a painting of hope. Of future. Of the vastness that we live within, in this big Universe. We are children growing up in a small part of it, surrounded by it's immense beauty and wonder. And like children, we want to put everyting in our mouths. We want to reach out and touch it. We want to explore!

This is my friend Trevor. He has a magical voice. He could give the likes of James Earl Jones a run for his money. He's one of those characters who draws you to him, like gravity. Gravity is a force in the making of planets, like our blue earth. It's unseen, but felt. It's powerful, like some of the people we know.
Of course, nothing is more powerful than an entire life supporting planet. Specially one equipped to support the adundant life we see here everyday, all around us. I wonder where else in the universe we will someday find such a world as ours? There is likely nothing that compares.
In this painting, you see much of water and land and sky. Much of everything.

This gorgeous little girl was my neighbour and very special friend. She was about 7 years old, and then, as she does now, has her entire future ahead of her. She, like the rest of us, is made up of all of the magical elements of the cosmos just as she is of this earth. That means she is as worthy, as full of potential and as important as any other, anywhere. Only she is Kimmy. She is just as unique and special.
This painting is about what we are made of on an elemental level, as well as who we are capable of becoming. What we are capable of becoming depends on how big our dreams are. So dream big! It costs the same to dream big as it does to dream small.
